The main cause of baldness is heredity. It has been proven that Male Pattern Baldness or Androgenetic Alopecia is directly related to genetic factors especially male hormones. The hair in the bald area are sensitive to the male hormone testosterone which causes reduced growth and thinning of hair in these areas. Some men have baldness only in the front or the vertex, while in others it is more severe. But no matter how extensive the baldness, there is always a “Horseshoe” shaped area of permanent hair at the back and sides of the head.

Scientists have found that these hair are genetically programmed to resist the effect of male hormones. Such hair when transplanted into areas continue to survive and grow permanently. This form the basis of hair transplantation.It is very important to get any hair problem diagnosed and treated as early as possible. Mostly people come to a Trichology clinic when the state of the hair is deteriorating both quality and quantity wise.

There is no doubt that whoever suffers from the hairloss would want his or her volume back, the way it was before.This kind of improvement can be possible only if the treatment is started at an early stage, when the hair follicle is still "alive", even if it is not in good condition.

For a person who is in advanced deterioration stages, and does not undergo treatment, there is no prevention except for the future baldness. That is why, if we see no improvement, but on the other hand, the deterioration does not continue and the existing volume of hair is maintained-one must regard it as an achievement.

For your first consultation, you will be required to not shampoo your hair for at least 48 hours before your visit, as shampooing can wash away some of the vital evidence needed to diagnose your problem.

The hormone Testosterone present both in male and female gets converted into DHT which is responsible for the hair follicle miniaturization and pattern baldness.

This conversion takes place in the scalp and DHT is present in the sebum, the oil secreted by the scalp. And thus if left alone it is reabsorbed by the follicles and harms them by causing Apoptosis (premature cell death). Once the cells die the capillary circulation reduces automatically and Anagen (growing) hair goes prematurely into Telogen(falling) phase. When the DHT continues to act on the follicles the Anagen phase which is normally3-5 years long becomes short and next hair produced by the same follicle is shorter, thinner and fall early till the follicle can no longer produce hair and is dead

The main constituent of hair is the protein Keratin. Keratin is a remarkable protein, which is resistant to wear and tear. Like other proteins, keratin has very large molecules made up of smaller units called amino acids, joined together in chains like beads on a string.

Hair also contains fats, pigment (melanin), small amounts of vitamins, and traces of zinc and other metals. Hair also contains water which, although it makes up only 10-13% of the hair, is extremely important for its physical and chemical properties.

The portion of the hair that we can see is called the shaft. Each shaft of hair protrudes from its follicle, which is a tube-like pouch just below the surface of the skin. The hair is attached to the base of the follicle by the hair root, which is where the hair actually grows and where it is nourished by blood capillaries. Like the rest of the body, hairs are made of cells. As new cells form at its root, the hair is gradually pushed further and further out of the follicle. The cells at the base of each hair are close to the blood capillaries, and are living.

As they get pushed further away from the base of the follicle they no longer have any nourishment, and so they die. As they die, they are transformed into a hard protein called keratin. So, each hair we see above the skin is dead protein. It is the follicle, which lies deep in the skin, that is essential in growing hair. Also, the thickness of each hair depends on the size of the follicle from which it is growing.
