Amala Cancer Hospital and Research Centre was established in 1978 as nonprofit, charitable institution aimed at treatment and management of Cancer in Central Kerala. Over the years, Amala has grown to become one of the major voluntary territory level hospital in India having modern diagnostic, therapeutic and research facilities to combat Cancer and other ailments.

This 550 bed hospital complex is unique in having three principal systems of medicines namely Allopathy, Ayurveda and Homoeopathy in the same campus. We are handling an average of 4,000 new Cancer cases and 6,000 Cancer inpatients in a year. The centre manages 35,000 Cancer outpatient visits yearly.

The Indian system of Medicine, Ayurveda is ancient and rich. Its earliest concepts are set out in the sacred writings called the Vedas, especially in the metrical passages of the Atharvaveda, which may possibly date as far back as the 2nd millennium BC.This system of Medicine has been practiced in the Country from time immemorial and has stood the test of time. Amala realised the potentials of this holistic system. This resulted in establishing Amala Ayurveda Hospital in the Complex in February 1982.

Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, a charitable institution founded by the Carmelite Fathers (CMI), has a modern Super Speciality Hospital with 1000 beds Medical College, Research Centre, Homoeopathic Hospital and an Ayurvedic Hospital with 100 beds in its campus, that are ISO 9001:2008 certified.

This is a unique institution where one can have modern medical facilities with advanced diagnosis and therapeutic techniques and also the holistic medical facilities of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy. Ayurvedic Hospital is currently doing research on Cancer and HIV/AIDS.

As a patient, if you are holding a valid medical insurance policy, you are entitled to avail cashless facility for inpatient treatment at Amala Ayurvedic Hospital, subject to the terms and conditions of the medical insurance policy.

Amala Institute of Medical Sciences is equipped with a waste treatment plant within the compound, that contains Solid waste treatment plant and Waste water treatment plant. Easily degradable solid wastes are dumped into the biogas plant that supplies biogas for the internal needs of Amala. Other bio-degradable solid wastes are disposed off in an environment-friendly manner. Non-degradable wastes are collected and sold to third-party recycling plants.

The waste water treatment plant has a capacity of 10 lakh litres. The treatment plants makes minimal use of electricity, and is far below the pollution levels set forth by the Government. There are no other buildings or complexes near the waste treatment plant, which is away from residential and commercial areas. This ensures that the public does not face any difficulties in relation to odour, etc.
