Additional Information

Kerala Ayurveda: The most coveted Indian science, Ayurveda is the donation of ancient Indian sage, Charaka to the world. He has written everything about this in his book called CharakaSamhita. The word Ayurveda itself means "Knowledge or Science of Life”. The main philosophy of this science is to treat living beings as mind, body and spirit together. The God of this wonderful science is Lord Dhanwanthari.

It is believed that Lord Dhanwantari is the incarnation of the supreme God. There are lots of references to this in the ancient Indian Vedas. Another noted ancient Physician-Sage of India, "Sisruta", has clearly defined perfect health. He narrates a person is perfectly healthy when his somatic and psychic humours are in equilibrium, having proper digestion with normal functioning of the fundamental tissues of the body and body waste along with the proper processing of the mind, soul and the cognitive organs.

It has been well linked with Astrology and Astronomy and proof of it is seen in many Vedic literatures. Though the practice of Ayurveda is common in India, Kerala, a tiny state, also known as The God's Own Country boasts a very rich tradition in this science of life and longevity. Ayurveda is not to be considered as a system of alternate therapy for treating ailments alone. It is also a system of maintaining complete good health of mind, body and spirit.

There are very good traditional practitioners of Ayurveda in Kerala. During olden times, the practitioners were not business minded. They used to take this profession as a God given gift and never used to squeeze money from the patients. But in present day world, when everything is a business, some people have made Ayurveda as their tool for the same. Now-a-days, one has to be extremely cautious when selecting a treatment centre.

Ayurveda presents a six-stage procedure for diagnosis known as Kriya. The first 4 stages being unique to Ayurveda in that they permit recognition and elimination of the disease before it start its clinical systems. Understanding the various stages of pathogenesis accumulation (sanchaya), provocation (prakopa) spread or migration (prasara), deposition or augmentation, manifestation (vyakti) and the differentiation (bheda) is can work as a physician in Ayurveda.

Examination of the pulse (NadiParikshan): The leading clinical skill in ayurvedic diagnosis it can provide unlimited insights into the history of the patient. The ideal time for pulse examination is early morning in empty stomach. But in case of emergency, it can be examined at any time of the day or night. An experienced ayurvedic physician can assess your body’s nature (prakriti), pathological state (vikruti), and imbalances of body type, very subtle observations & even prognosis of disease through the pulse.

Examination of the tongue: A vata affected tongue is dry, rough & cracked. Pitta suffered tongue is red with a burning sensation and kapha influenced it is wet, slimy and coated. Examination of skin: It can tell many things about disease, state of organs and palpation. Vata affected skin is rough and temperature is below normal. Pitta affected one has quite high temperature and kapha effected is cold and wet.

PARKINSON'S DISEASE: Know how you can get back to near normal life, Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nearly a million people in the United States. The disease affects the central nervous system that often impairs the sufferer's motor skills speech, and other functions. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement and a loss of physical movement in extreme cases.

Parkinson's disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. Studies conclude that primary symptoms are the results of decreased stimulation of the motor cortex by the basal ganglia. It is believed to be caused by the insufficient formation and action of dopamine, which is produced in the dopaminergic neurons of the brain. Secondary symptoms may include high level cognitive dysfunction and subtle language problems. The disease is considered chronic and progressive.

It is thought that no cure exists for the disease and also that any medication also become less effciency. Amazing results through Ayurveda, No disease spelt out in Ayurveda is an exact equivalent of Parkinson's Disease. Going by the symptoms of Parkinsonism Tremor, Rigidity, Bradykinesia, Akinesia, Gait disturbance, Instability of limbs, Dementia, Depression etc are compared with diseases identified in classified in Ayurveda and treatment is followed on those lines.

Needless to say, it is not the classification but the cure that the patient attains needs to be recognised as the true capability of Ayurveda in treating Parkinsonism. While the disturbance of Vata (wind) element in the body is identified as the root cause of Parkinsonism, it is probably Kampavata (Vata predominance associated with tremor) is the nearest identified Ayurveda classification. Since constitution of patients also pose variations of this disease, treatments also need to be suitably adjusted by a qualified physician.

DHANWANTAREEYAM the best in Ayurveda consulting: In 2006, the annual Ayurvedic seminar held at Calicut (Kerala, India) on the occasion of the birthday of Vaidya Ratnam P.S Varier, the Founder of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, focused on Parkinsonism. Renowned Physicians from Ayurveda and other specializations came together with their experiences. Experiences shared by the authors of various papers presented at the seminar gave a clear appreciation of treatment of Parkinson’s Disease using Ayurveda.

While appropriate treatments resulted in tremendous improvement in aspects relating to gait in walking, Tremor, Rigidity other aspects like facial expressions, tremor during resting etc showed reasonable improvements. Some patients reported improvements and were returning to play golf!
Others were returning to the use of Computer key board, ability to gracefully hold cup and saucer! For a Parkinson’s disease afflicted these are no mean achievements. Treatments had been simple and not exceeding about a month in comparison with the treatments like Palidotomy, Thalamotomy, Deep Brain Stimulation practiced in modern medicine.
