Navara Kizhi - - Massage with Navara rice (medicinal rice) cooked in cow milk and decoctions, and filled in linen pouches. Podikkizi (Choorna Swedam)- Therapeutic sweating of the body with the help of herbal powders and medicines wrapped in linen pouches; applied at moderate heat to sweat the body. Dhara - Pouring steady stream of medicated oil or decoctions to the affected area. Different types of dhara are in practice to treat various illnesses as explained below. Thaila dhara (with oil) is one of the major oil therapies. Shirodhara - Medicated oil is gently poured in a continuous stream on the forehead of the patient, as decided by the physician based on the ailment. Indications: Tone up brain and improve memory. Effective for neurological disorders, epilepsy, Insomnia, migraine, Parkinson etc.
Thakra Dhara - Buttermilk is used in place of oil and applied on affected areas in a steady stream or in an incessant application. Indication: Skin diseases, depression, insomnia etc. Ksheera Dhara – Milk is used as the medium in ksheera dhara; Milk added with decoction prepared from various herbs is gently poured in a continuous stream on the affected area. Indication: Depression and related illnesses.
Dhanyamla Dhara- It is a very special dhara using dhanyamlam, a liquid prepared from cereals and vinegar in a strenuous process that takes many of days to complete. Indication: Recommended in vata related ailments. Netra Dhara- Application of herbal extracts into the eyes in a gentle and continuous stream to treat various eye diseases, and visual disorders. Tharpanam: Retention of medicated oil or ghee over the eye balls. Indication: Prevents cataract and improves eye sight by strengthening the optic nerve.
Vasthy – A process of retaining medicated oil or decoctions over the affected area. This is the most effective treatment in Ayurveda. Different types of Vasthy are performed for different ailments.
