Endocrine, Nutritional and Metabolic Diseases
Disorders of the thyroid gland, Diabetes Mellitus and its complication like Retinopathy, Neuropathy etc; Diabetes Insipidus, Disorders of other endocrine glands, Malnutrition, Nutritional deficiencies, Obesity and other Metabolic disorders. In Thyroid disorder, the Virechana line of treatment is advocated and followed by internal medication.
A different type of management is done in cases of diabetes. If the patient is on insulin or oral hypoglycemic, the patient is asked to continue the same medications as associated Ayurvedic therapies are started. During the course of treatment, the medicines are tapered and gradually Ayurvedic therapies, like Virechana and Dhara, are administered, followed by medications. Symptomatically, the patients feel very much better and well-being is obtained. In some instances we adopt some external therapies to reduce certain symptoms like neuritis. In obesity, Rooksha Sweda, Virechana and Basti lines of treatment are done depending upon the conditions, followed by internal medications. Similarly the other metabolic and hormonal diseases are managed by Panchakarma therapies, Yoga and simple medications.
Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue
Cellulitis, Acute Lymphadenitis, Pyoderma, Dermatitis, Pemphigus Vulgaris, Atopic Dermatitis, Eczema – Flexural Infantile, Intrinsic, Atopic; Neurodermatitis, Seborrhoeic Dermatitis, Allergic Contact Dermatitis, Exfoliative Dermatitis, Pruritus; Papulosquamous disorders, - Psoriasis, Pustular Psoriasis, Guttate Psoriasis, Flexural Psoriasis, Pityriasis Rosea, Lichen Planus; Urticaria, Erythema Multiforme, Erythema Nodosum, Radiation-related disorders of the skin - Sunburn; Alopecia Areata, Acne Vulgaris, Vitiligo, Chloasma, Lupus Erythematosus and subcutaneous tissue. Skin disorders -- particularly Psoriasis, Allergic Dermatitis, Urticaria and Eczema -- are effectively treated by internal and external Ayurvedic medicines.
Psoriasis is said to be a genetically predetermined disorder with classical symptoms of Erythematous patches and scaling. Seasonal variations, stress, and certain triggering factor exacerbate the disease. It is treated by therapies like Dhara and Panchakarma, mainly Vamana and Virechana. In certain cases, Basti therapy is also advocated.
Digestive System
Stomatitis, Oesophagitis, Gastro, Oesophageal Reflux Disease, Gastric ulcer, Duodenal ulcer, Gastritis and Duodenitis, Appendicitis, Inguinal hernia, Non-infective Enteritis and Colitis; Other diseases of the intestines like Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Constipation, Fissure and Fistula of the anal and rectal regions, Diseases of the liver, Chronic Hepatitis, Cirrhosis of the liver, Alcoholic Liver Disease, Disorders of the gallbladder - Cholelithiasis, Cholecystitis, Pancreatitis; Intestinal mal-absorption and Coeliac Disease.
In these disorders, Virechana and Basti lines of treatment are very effective. Suggestions regarding food habits and lifestyle are the main focus. In certain conditions external therapies, like Shirodhara and Takradhara, are advocated. Internal medications are later prescribed followed by Rasayanas- Rejuvenative tonics.
