PACIFIC INSTITUTE OF REFLEXOLOGY - Vancouver

In May 1982 the Reflexology Centre of Vancouver was established by Chris Shirley to promote, practice and teach reflexology in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In January 1996 the name was changed to the Pacific Institute of Reflexology to reflect the development of the Centre into a broader reaching institution. The foot reflexology, hand reflexology and ear reflexology charts published by the Institute and our foot reflexology instructional DVD are now available in Europe, Australia and throughout North America. No doubt this expansion will continue as exposure is increased to other parts of the world through the Institute's web site.

Chris Shirley's mission is to have reflexology accepted and embraced by mainstream society and modern medicine. The Pacific Institute of Reflexology is the vehicle that he has created to fulfil this mission. To this end, resources are made available to interested persons at the Institute, such as information on research that has been conducted world wide, a reference library of books, newsletters and literature in the field of reflexology and complementary medicine.

He has expanded the Institute's curriculum to include advanced courses on the professional aspects of having a private practice. These courses round out a professional training program for those persons who are looking to practice reflexology in a professional and clinical capacity. In addition, Chris intends to create instructional videos on hand and ear reflexology - to make the practice of reflexology accessible to a broader range of people.Committed to develop a better understanding of reflexology, the Institute will continue to actively produce and disseminate reflexology research.Acknowledging that communication and teamwork is powerful, Chris Shirley is a member of the Reflexology Association of British Columbia, the Reflexology Association of Canada and other reflexology associations worldwide.

Additional Information

At this point in time reflexology is not recognized by the any of the provincial governments in Canada. Consequently, anyone may call themselves a reflexologist.However, in British Columbia, many municipalities require evidence of training in order to issue a business license.The Pacific Institute of Reflexology is one of the oldest schools of reflexology in British Columbia and it's training courses are recognised by most (if not all) municipalities.

The Reflexology Association of British Columbia (RABC) requires an approved level of training in order to be recognized as a professional reflexologist and accepted as a professional member. The Reflexology Association of Canada (RAC) also requires a certain level of training in order to be recognized as a professional member. Professional members of RAC are also required to fulfill ongoing requirements to maintain their professional status.

Completion of both our Basic Holistic Foot Reflexology Course and our Advanced Reflexology: Professional Skills Course is accepted by both associations for professional recognition. The Advanced Reflexology: Professional Skills Course prepares a reflexologist for professional practice by covering topics that expand their knowledge of reflexology (especially professional practice) as well as become familiar with basic business skills that pertain to professional practice of reflexology. The assignments while providing a learning opportunity also provide an opportunity to lay the foundations of your reflexology practice.

Most people looking for reflexology treatments are looking for foot reflexology. However, there are a number of people who, for a number of reasons (ticklish feet, smelly feet, infected feet, injured feet, self-conscious/private about their feet, etc.) are unwilling or unable to receive foot reflexology treatment. Hand reflexology and ear reflexology are alternatives that produce equivalent results to foot reflexology and are also much more conducive for self-help – facilitating clients being able to help themselves between professional treatments. It therefore makes sense for a professional reflexologist to have competency in one or both of these alternative modalities.

In recent years there have been significant advances in development of reflexology techniques and knowledge. Our Advanced Reflexology: Clinical Skills Course and Advanced Reflexology: Vertical Reflexology Courses provide opportunities for reflexologists to develop their competency to a clinical level so that they are able to address specific health conditions effectively.At present, with lack of government recognition of reflexology, it is illegal for reflexologists to practice medicine (diagnose, treat for specific health conditions, or, make any medical claims). To practice reflexology professionally it is therefore necessary to stay on the right side of the law and walk a very fine line.

Most reflexologists are self employed – and there are numerous niche markets that can be explored when commencing your practice. Some reflexologists work through integrated natural health clinics and some work through spas. Just recently a number of reflexology clinics have opened and may provide employment opportunities.Fees charged for reflexology vary - just as fees for other services do.
