Additional Information

The word Cajun comes from an ethnic group of people that have grown up in Southern Louisiana or the French speaking Acadiana area, as it is sometimes known. A Cajun tradition that has been passed down through the ages is the Traiteurs, sometimes spelled Treateur.

These faith healers have existed since the 1700s when the Acadians migrated to south Louisiana from France. But the tradition of the Traiteurs is slowly dying out, as it is not as prevalent as it once was. Some of the Traiteurs that I know incorporate other types of energy based modalities such as Healing Touch and Reiki.

The Cajun healer is thought to be able to “treat” certain ailments. Most have their own specialty that was handed down to them usually from a relative. Some of their specialties include warts, shingles, sunstroke, bleeding, earaches and toothaches.

As a small girl I remembered my Mom bringing me to an elderly lady that “treated” me for warts that I had on my hand. The warts went away, but I’m not sure of the time involved. When my son was in college he started having numerous warts on his hands around the cuticles and on the calf of one leg. After a visit to a dermatologist who told us that burning the warts would ruin his cuticles and the warts would probably come back, I called a lady who was a Traiteur.

The only information that I gave her was his name and the nature of the problem, She said to call back in a couple of weeks if the warts were still there. I called back as we did not notice a difference. Again, she said to call back in a couple of weeks. Shortly after, my son looked at his leg and realized that the warts were gone. There were no signs of warts on his hand as well. I had a similar situation with a case of shingles that I had. After being treated 3 times, there were no signs of shingles.

The older traditional Traiteurs usually spoke Cajun French. Their methods of treatments were “passed” down to other generations, usually from the opposite gender. But this also varied.Because the methods were usually passed down orally, their traditions varied by region and in the methods that they were taught. I remember my great aunt trying to give me the prayers that she used to treat sunstroke. But she said the prayers in French and I did not speak French, so I was not able to learn these. Years later, I wished that I had paid more attention to what she was trying to teach me.

The traditional Traiteurs were mostly Catholic and so they said prayers, usually in silence. Sometimes Novenas were said (saying a set of prayers for 9 days). Faith is the main element and some Traiteurs are essentially "praying" for the sick. Some may call their method of treatment faith healing or ''laying on of hands.''

From my experience as an energy healer, I understand now that they are balancing the energy fields that surround the body as they use their hands in a pattern around the body, usually doing this 3 times. In addition, their intention of wanting the person to be healthy is part of their philosophy. They also felt that it was necessary for the person to "ask" to be healed...they would not offer.

Because doctors were not that accessible in bayou and marsh areas of rural parts of South La. nor could most people afford to go to a physician, the Traiteurs in the past played an important part in health care. A friend remembered her grandmother's life a traiteur. There would often be lines of people waiting with eggs or chickens as payment. Other family members remember the family traiteur as being willingly confined to their house as there were many people depending on them.

Most Traiteurs consider their healing abilities a gift from God, and therefore do not ask for payment in exchange for their services. Although it is acceptable to leave a gift for receiving a treatment, gifts are never required. The older generation of Traiteurs used to tell you not to say “thank you” as it was thought that this would make the treatment not work.

In Southern Louisiana, traditional medicine and Traiteurs offer patients a range of resources for treating illness. Although these 2 methods are very distinct, Traiteurs and their patients do not view the two systems as conflicting.

Reiki (ray-key) is a natural healing technique that makes use of the laying on of hands. It originated in part with Ling Chi of the Chinese Taoists over 5000 years ago. Reiki was re-discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian minister in the 1800’s. During his 10 year quest he studied the teachings of Christ, and the sacred literature of Japan, China, India and Tibet..

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words. Rei and ki. Rei means supernatural force of spiritual intelligence and Ki means life energy. Thus Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy.Treatments can be done in person or remotely. It may aid in helping illnesses, injuries and diseases. Reiki is very versatile and can be used to heal or improve any condition or difficulty.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a Religion. It has no dogma and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn or use Reiki. Reiki is compatible with all Religious paths and faiths.Sessions usually involve a combination of energy-based modalities that are individualized to fit the client.REIKI AND THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY,Dr. Mehmet Oz is one of the leading cardiovascular surgeons in the United States. He now has his own television Show, The Dr. Oz Show.

The New York Times reported that Dr. Oz has allowed the use of Reiki during open-heart surgeries and heart transplant operations. Says Dr. Oz: "Reiki has become a sought-after healing art among patients and mainstream medical professionals."

Reiki is another popular energy healing therapy, which is typically performed by a trained Reiki master. Here the practitioner's light touch on, or slightly above, specific areas of the body is used to balance the flow of energy throughout the body. The laying on of hands on the head, face, neck, chest, abdomen and back delivers varying degrees of natural vibrational "heated" energy as needed, to strengthen the body to heal itself. Reiki can also be self-administered.

Dr. Nancy Eos of the University of Michigan Medical School is one of the increasing number of doctors who incorporates Reiki in their medical practices. "I can't imagine practicing medicine without Reiki," Ego says.

One of the largest hospitals in northern California is California Pacific Medical Center. Dr. Mike Cantwell, a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases provides one to three hour long Reiki sessions. Dr. Cantwell said, " I have found Reiki to be useful in the treatment of acute illnesses such as musculosketetal injury, pain, headaches, acute infections and asthma. Reiki is also useful for patients with chronic illnesses especially those associated with chronic pain."

When a healer places his or her hands on or near a person in need of healing, the electromagnetic field of the healer’s hands sweeps through a range of frequencies based on the needs of the part of the body being treated. Faraday’s law indicates that one electromagnetic field can induce currents into a nearby conductor and through this process, induce a similar field around it.

Essential oils come from the aromatic liquids that are found within flowers, roots, leaves, shrubs, bushes, resins and seeds. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for healing purposes. In Egypt, bowls of alabaster were found in King Tutankhamen’s tomb filled with more bottles of essential oils then gold. These oils still maintained their quality and medicinal properties.

Not all oils are created equal. When purchasing an essential oil, it is important to be aware of the quality and potency of the oils and its frequency. Some oils have been diluted, mixed with a carrier oil that can become rancid, processed in a way that is detrimental to the plant material, questionable purity, less than optimal cultivating practices, grown in less than desirable soil, air and water conditions, is not certified as therapeutic and cannot be ingested. Oils that are certified are considered therapeutic and can be used in several ways for optimal benefit.

When an essential oil is inhaled it heightens the senses. The oils can be inhaled directly from the bottle or used in a diffuser or used in a bowl of hot water with a few drops of essential oils (cover your head with a towel over the bowl in a tent fashion and breathe deeply and slowly) ,Many essential oils can safely be put directly on the skin. Put 2-3 drops of oil in the palm of your hand or directly on the area. Massage in a circular motion onto the skin. Some oils can be used with a roll on for easier application.

If sensitivity develops, use a carrier oil to dilute the oil. DO NOT use water as this increase the oils properties on the skin, especially if it gets into the eyes (flush with OIL, not water.) Some oils can be ingested as a dietary supplement or as a food flavoring enhancement. (lemon, lime, orange, basil, black pepper, ginger, fennel, oregano, dill, clove, lemongrass, grapefruit, rosemary, peppermint, wintergreen, thyme and tarragon to name a few ) Several drops of oil can also be put into a gelatin capsule, added to water, juice or yogurt and used in cooking.

Because many essential oils have antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial properties, they can be used in general household cleaning. Lemon Myrtle can be used as a cleansing agent to purify household surfaces. This is probably one of the most versatile essential oil on the market today. It is often used to cleanse and soothe minor burns, cuts and other skin irritations. It helps to balance and calm the mind and body.

Lavender oil is considered an adaptogen, meaning that it can have a normalizing effect to adapt or adjust. Long known for its relaxing and calming effects, lavender also can help fatigue. Researchers at Sanyo Hospital in Japan gave fatigued subjects a foot soak in warm water containing lavender for 10 minutes and reflexology with jojoba oil containing lavender for 10 minutes. Fatigue scores improved significantly. Lavender seems to be able to adapt to the needs of the person using it.

Cypress promotes a sense of grounding and security and is traditionally used to support the circulatory system. This sweet, warm fragrance can be used to support pancreatic function and proper digestion.Because of clove’s antiseptic properties, it helps to boost the body’s natural defenses and regulate the body’s natural response to stress and is anti-inflammatory and also a blood thinner.
