The salt crystal for the Orion Light began its life as part of an ancient sea in what is now known as Eastern Europe and over time became buried deep below the surface of the earth. An idea of how this happened follows:

There are still many discoveries happening around the world, as reported in The Age (24th November 2003) ‘Big meteorite had a killer impact’. This article relates to the end of the Permian period when the sea, where the salt crystal originated from, would have been coming to the end of its life.

The Permian period ran from 289-245 million years ago. The end of this period started around 251 million years ago and is marked by the largest extinction of life in the history of the Earth (estimated at 90% of amphibians, reptiles and basic plants); it is commonly recognised and referred to as the age before the dinosaurs.

The article states that meteorite fragments were found in Antarctica and a geochemist says that a meteorite hit was responsible for this extinction; as was the case when the dinosaurs died out. Other geologists dispute this as the cause and have their own theories. One day we may know for sure.

It is believed that the end of the Permian period was triggered by the many continent movements, a drop in sea levels along with the changing temperatures. In turn this ended the life of the sea, burying its minerals, animal and plant content; thereby forming the salt crystal we now have today for the Orion Light.
