Our Profile
The founders, James W. and Shirley Foster opened an on-campus training facility known as Myotherapy Institute of Utah in January 1987. Myotherapy Institute Research Center (MIRC) branched out from the residency program in the fall of 1991. As of January 2000, we are now known as Myotherapy Institute of Massage (MIM). The term Myotherapy means muscle therapy, the perfect title to reflect the purpose of the school.
Jim Foster received several requests from satisfied clients to teach others his unique and gifted methods learned from his 15 years as a massage therapist. He understood health problems on a first hand basis and knew what it took to recover. MIM uses techniques and philosophies he used in his own business.
Jim and Shirley Foster responded to the need for people to accomplish their desire to become massage therapists and not leave their jobs, families, homes, etc., to attend an on-campus curriculum. The awareness created the idea of a distance education program for people who would otherwise miss doing this marvelous work. So with much work, effort and time, a distance education program for massage therapy was born.
Jim Foster, a gifted therapist and teacher, devised a method of producing videos and audiotapes with actual classroom settings. We feel extremely fortunate that his vision created such a wonderful program.
Our distance education program continues to add new courses. Students take advantage of the same or better training that an On-Campus student receives. It's a tremendous advantage for the students to listen or view their tapes where the concepts taught are clear in their minds. Mr. Foster passed away in 1993, but Shirley Foster and her dedicated, well-trained staff continue his Myotherapy dream.
