Many of these plants have been part of the traditional healing practices of indigenous peoples for centuries. One such plant is the aloe ferox or Cape Aloe found in South Africa, which grows in abundance in the wild in the Albertinia area of the Southern Cape.
The inhabitants of Southern Africa have known the healing and regenerative powers of the Aloe ferox for centuries. Its importance in the life of the Khoi and San peoples of Southern Africa can still be seen in their paintings on the walls of their ancient cave dwellings. The tapping of the bitter sap from the leaves of the aloe ferox is a distinctive and unique process to this species of aloe and has been practised for centuries by the descendants of these indigenous peoples. Today it still forms part of local tradition.
Early travellers, missionaries and settlers to Africa soon realised the importance of this plant, incorporating it into their own healing practices, taking it with them on their travels and finally exporting it to other lands. Today the aloe ferox plant has been accepted world wide for its superior antiseptic, cleansing, moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties.
